For Immediate Release – November 6, 2016 – S. Bryce Wing Award
The Maryland Hunt Cup Association announces the presentation of the S. Bryce Wing trophy for 2016 to film producer Sam Slater. The presentation took place at the Pennsylvania Hunt Cup, in front of Mr. Slater’s friends and admirers.
Given to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to Maryland timber racing, Mr. Slater personifies this award that honors the memory of S. Bryce Wing, who was a member of the Maryland Hunt Cup Association from 1939 until his death at age 85 in 1975. Mr. Wing was Secretary of the Maryland Hunt Cup from 1956 to 1966 and also president of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association (now the National Steeplechase Association) from 1948 to 1964. He was also a member of The Jockey Club and a Master of Foxhounds at Elkridge-Harford.
Mr. Slater documented sanctioned races and point-to-points throughout the Mid-Atlantic, and elsewhere, for almost forty years. The first Maryland Hunt Cup recorded by Slate was in 1976, won by Charles S. Bird Jr.’s, Fort Devon, ridden and trained by R. Penn-Smith Hannum. Mr. Slater’s Hunt Cup Productions was the only film production company for the Maryland Hunt Cup, Grand National, the My Lady’s Manor races, as well as others.
In addition to recording races, Mr. Slater produced special films such as the documentary on the Maryland Hunt Cup Centennial and Americans at Aintree.
Mr. Slater’s hobby grew into a professional film company and an integral component of all National Steeplechase Association (NSA) race meets, producing films that are enjoyed by horsemen and steeplechase enthusiasts nationally and internationally.
